What to Consider Before Getting Coached
In my previous posts, I’ve shared insights from a coach’s perspective. But today, let’s flip the lens—what does it take to be a great coachee?
If you’re considering coaching, the first step is understanding what a coach can truly do for you. Coaching is not mentoring, training, or facilitation—it’s a unique partnership focused on helping you unlock your potential. Before diving in, take time to distinguish between these roles so that you’re clear on what you need.
Once you’ve decided that coaching is the right path, the next step is to find a coach who resonates with you. Coaching is a journey, not a quick fix. It often extends beyond just a few sessions, so it’s essential to find someone with whom you can build a meaningful and productive working relationship.
What to Consider Before Getting Coached
To make the most of your coaching experience, consider these key factors:
- Commit to a Schedule – Set a regular day and time for your sessions. Consistency helps build momentum and ensures steady progress.
- Choose Your Format – Decide whether you prefer online or in-person sessions. As you progress, you may find a hybrid model works best.
- Don’t Expect Direct Answers – A coach’s role is to guide and challenge you, not to hand you solutions. Be open to exploring your own answers.
- Keep a Journal – Documenting your sessions will help track your growth. Note key insights, action steps, and reflections to keep yourself accountable.
- Mentally Prepare for Each Session – Enter your coaching sessions with an open and focused mind. This helps you get the most out of your time.
- Embrace the Process – Change doesn’t happen overnight. Coaching is about long-term transformation, not instant results. Stay patient and trust the journey.
- Review & Reflect – After each session, take a few moments to update your journal. Capture the actions you’ve committed to and monitor your progress.
These are just starting points—your coaching experience will evolve as you grow. Every session will bring new insights, and over time, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your goals.
